Mr. Reese

There's another new member of my parents family, Mr. Reese, named after the man from Person of Interest if you've ever seen that show. Mr. Reese wasn't always named Mr. Reese. Previously he was named Mikey. He also didn't start out with my family.  See, Mr. Reese was previously adopted by my sister, off Craigslist. She hid him in her dorm room. Since some dorms barely allow fish, much less cats, Mr. Reese ended up at my parents house. My parents have never had a cat before, since my mom is allergic. They've always had dogs. Yet, here Mr. Reese is.  Thankfully, I don't have to live in the house while everyone adjusts to his presence. It's been rough from what I've heard. Remi has been simultaneously excited and scared of him. She tries all day long to sniff him, but he will have none of that. The first time I saw Mr. Reese, he was swatting Remi in the face. I was actually quite impressed by his speed, and mad at him for hitting the dog. The last...

College Graduation

My college graduation was honestly one of the best days that I've had in awhile. I was a bit stressed going into it, worried about my two families getting there and getting along and getting to see everyone I wanted to. My sister wasn't able to make it because of work which I was pretty bummed about, but that's life. I didn't need to have worried because everything went better than I could have ever expected.  The night before graduation, I decorated my cap. I took a long time deciding what to put on it, since I love so many things. I eventually went with this. Which, I would only do to steal characteristics and weird things, like I said before ;) I had so much cake the week before, it was delightful. The morning of graduation I was confused. The weather had said all week that it was going to be in the high 70's and sunny. I'd stressed about my family getting sunburnt and being sweaty in pictures. Instead, it was cloudy and in the fifties, tops. I...

Google Searches

It's fun to look at the Google searches that people use to find my blog. They're the most random things.  The top searches are variations of Victoria's Secret Logo. Some with an s, some without an apostrophe, and so on. That makes me laugh, because I only worked there for two weeks. So, random google searchers looking for this,  know that I only worked there for two weeks. Long enough to know that it sucks. On my very first shift, I stayed until three in the morning, then came back at eight.      My lips got huge from dehydration. It was awful. After that first week, they were very unclear on scheduling, and then scheduled a meeting at the last minute while I was out of town. I left pretty soon afterwards, getting a job at my college bookstore. I would never work there again, it was pure drama. I hate to sound, sexist? But a workplace with ninety percent women is not for me. Too much drama.  My next popular search is selfies gone wrong. That...

Characters in Writing

It's not often that I share my writing with people. That's because when I do, I want it to be the best it can be. The other thing is that when you share your writing with those closest to you, they wonder if the characters are representations of themselves.  While I haven't had anyone confront me yet about being a character in my writing, I know that it will happen one day. All the writers that I talk to and my professors have told me that they've gotten teary phone calls from mom's and sisters, apologizing for things that they never did, because they see a character in a story and think that it's based on them. They think it's a commentary on their parenting, or what not. The thing is, it's not.  Most of my characters just come to me. They pop up in my head, and start talking. I see the weird situations that they've been thrown into, or decided to participate in themselves. And then I go from there. Draft to draft I fill them in, and learn ...

House Guest

My best friend from middle school and high school, Kelsey, stayed with Sammy and I for a week. It was our first time having a house guest, and it went pretty well! We were all doing our own things most of the day so we weren't together that long. It was nice having someone to eat our food because I always make too much. I also had an excuse to buy ice cream because I wouldn't be the only one eating it :)  Gerald the fish was happy to see his mommy. His bubble nest was huge! We've never see it this big, and it went upwards as well.  It was weird having someone else living with us, in that we had to be more aware. We couldn't just walk around without our pants anymore. We had to close the bathroom door. We closed our door at night, making it extremely stuffy. (I had one of the worst panic attacks that I've had in awhile because of the heat, and just being exhausted from going out, and the fact that I'd just been so stressed about whether I might have one ...

UHL Graduation

Two weeks ago we had a graduation ceremony for my Honors and Leadership program. When I first got the letter inviting me to apply for the program four years ago, I hesitated. I'd done similar programs in high school and honestly just wanted to float through college without anything extra. I was reading my post  for my interview  and am so glad that I recorded this. It's fun to look back at that interview and see what has changed from them. This program has been hard. There were so many times that I just wanted to drop out. I'm so thankful that I didn't. My UHL classes were some of the best classes I took, besides my writing workshops. These classes were so diverse  with topics like Nuclear Technology and Policy, where I learned about the media and met some crazy people, and Migration, Literacy, and Modernity. That was honestly my favorite, and I have a letter from that professor on my wall because it was so touching.  This last year has been especially rough...

Last Day of School Together

I've been incredibly lucky to get to to go to school with my best friend the past four years. (And those two years of high school.) Getting to go to college together has been such an adventure. Sammy and I have explored Denver together and it's out city. It's down here that we've figured out who we are and what we want to do. Before we were married, this campus was 'our world.' It was away from our families and other influences. It was down here that we truly got to be ourselves. First Day of College I've loved waiting outside of classes for Sammy and getting some homework done, and seeing him outside of my classes as well. Trying a new food truck together, and other restaurants. Walking downtown together at night, and all those snowy cold nights where we would share one glove and walk as fast as possible to the bus.  When Sammy started going to school part time and working full time, we couldn't spend as much time on campus together. This l...
