A few of my favorite things

That page count. I wrote a good ten pages this weekend. UV light, The Office, and sprinkle cookies. Best combination ever. The saying on that poster that I got from Love the Grows. "I think we should just stop and cuddle it out." Best thing ever.  And the last thing I didn't get a picture of. But Sammy and I figured out the perfect way to hold hands when it's snowing. I just hold his hand inside his giant man glove. It works perfectly. :)

I think I'm funny.

I've got a crush. He's pretty cute, with his curly black hair and dark eyes. He has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I don't even know his name. . . Here he is! I can't stop watching. It's so funny. In all other seriousness, I think I'm pretty funny. Today someone wrote on the Facebook why do ppl put doe at the end of sentences? To make yourself sound dumber??! I commented and said, What's a ppl? Today everyone in my school received this picture in their inboxes. Yep, that's my boyfriend, looking all professional. Proud best friend over here! He's been doing so great in college, I'm so proud of him. He made the dean's list and was picked to be in one of those greek clubs because his writing is so good. :) :) :) It's funny, he can rock an academic essay like no one's business. Me? Not so much. But let me be creative and bam. Today I wrote a pretty great piece about meter usage in poetry. By great, I mean sar...

The award for most awkward selfies goes to. . .

Me! Today church was cancelled, right after I got out of the shower. As is tradition, the day I don't have church is the day I think I'm looking pretty awesome. So I wanted to take a picture of my outfit, but everyone was busy and no one wants to put up with my perfectionist self when I'm taking a picture. So I turned on photo booth and got to work contorting myself until I managed to get my whole outfit into the picture. This was the result. Hey, got all the outfit in. Please note the splatter paint skirt paired with striped shirt, cardigan, and sweater tights. And awkward hunched over self. After laughing for a bit while getting caught taking this wonderful selfie, I went through my pictures and found some pretty other awesome gems which all combined, should get me nominated for an award for most awkward selfies. (I didn't know this was a term until reading an article about the twitter. So I must use it.) Showing how happy I was to be back with my slippers ...

And why do we fall Bruce?

I fell today. Again. I tend to do that a lot lately. I'm not proud of it. Somewhere amidst the crazy thoughts and almost breakdown I remembered this quote that Sammy told me yesterday. Yesterday it was just a quote. Today it was a lifesaver. There's just something so powerful of the image of little Bruce Wayne being lifted out of the well with the bats flying around coming back into the world. It was scary down in the well, but it's also scary in the world. Sometimes we throw ourselves down into the well, cover ourselves with a bit of dirt, and beckon the bats to us. Then when someone comes to help lift us up, we realize the world is an ugly place, filled with fear, violence, hurt, uncertainty. It's also a beautiful place of love, giggles, and lucky charms. We're going to fall. Sometimes it's an accident. Sometimes we do it to ourselves. But that's. Ok. Because we need to learn to pick ourselves up. There's no greater feeling than knowing you were down...

Why I love living with girls

This week has been pretty great. It only took us about a semester and a half, but Joice and I finally did girly things! And we've been eating dinner together every night, and talking when we get ready in the morning. Just like all other relationships, you have to put in the effort for roommate relationships to work. It took some time, but we're making it work. Don't get me wrong, we haven't had any huge problems this whole time. But I'm definitely opening up and giving more of an effort and enjoying my experience more.  You know what I have been looking forward to? Doing girly things, like hair, and makeup, and such. There were a few attempts here and there, but not really anything. But yesterday I did Joice's hair, and Joice did my make up. AND IT WAS SO FUN!!!! And I feel pretty sexy not going to lie. I'm definitely going to be doing this more often.  I'm glad for this time in my life, to just have fun and do makeup. : )

I like him

I like him. He has smile lines instead of frown ones. He reassures me when I'm scared or anxious. He's my weekly Office date. He laughs at all my jokes. He reads all my writings. He promises that no snow will stop him from seeing me. He loves the Bears. He gives a pretty mean head massage. He'll wake up just to remind me that he's leaving his phone on incase I have some sort of freak accident emergency in the middle of the night. He's caring. He's loving. He's my best friend. I like him. : )

Poets don't have to rhyme

I'm really gaining an appreciation for poetry this semester. And just language in general. I never, ever, ever thought this would happen, but I'm so glad it has. I can already see a huge difference in my writing in general and I'm figuring out what I myself love in writing. It's pretty surprising, I'm a sucker for details. Details. Me! The girl who HATES putting details into her writing. The girl who swore off details back in fourth grade. The thing is, it's the RIGHT use of details that I love. There's a difference from taking time to craft your words to aptly describe something and paint a picture, and just throwing them in to sound more wordy and because all those writing workshops tell you to write out their eye color height weight, bla bla bla, and then you feel the need to shove said details down our throats. Makes me gag. Whenever I thought of poetry, I thought of depressing topics and such. And I always thought it just wasn't my thing. But this...

Changing it up

Yesterday, my eavesdropping inclined ears picked up a little something that turned out to be important. There was a job opening in the campus computers department of the bookstore, and maybe that one cashier would be interested in switching, but she didn't work until Friday, so they couldn't ask them until then. When that manager left, I turned to my lead and asked him what that was about, then told him if she wasn't interested I definitely would be. My lead promptly called that manager back over and told him. We talked for a little bit, and he scheduled me for an interview the next day (today.) The rest of my shift my lead jokingly called me a traitor. I told him I was just interested, it didn't mean anything, a girl can look at her options. Then I spent all night being worried. Why was I doing this? Was I a traitor? What if I switched and I hated it and I regretted everything and they wouldn't let me have my old job back and a meteor fell out of the sky and the ...

A Loving Story

For some reason my mind keeps going back to this thought over and over. If I'd been born 40 years earlier, I would have been arrested for this. For holding hands. You know why? Because we don't have the same skin color. I can't stop thinking about this story. The story of the Loving's, a couple who got married outside of Virginia, and then were arrested as soon as they returned because they were breaking the race laws. They were then told they had to leave the state for 25 years. They did so and started a family, but after a few years they hired a lawyer, wanting to make their marriage legal. They didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but they ended up making interracial marriage legal everywhere.  This  trailer is the first time I heard this story, and realized what an amazing thing these people did. I'm so grateful for the Loving's. I'm so thankful for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I'm so thankful for the brave people who inspired him ...

Today

Today, Primary wasn't that bad. My teaching partner was gone so I was in charge. Thankfully though another mom sat in with me so I wasn't all alone.  Today I got my teaching manual. But not my pictures. I've learned the pictures are very, very important. Today I actually caught all the runaways. I didn't have to bring anyone to their parents. There were no punches and no crying. I let the kids sit on the floor instead of their seats. This was greeted by much enthusiasm and more of a story time like atmosphere.  Today, I actually. Got. Through. The lesson!!!!!! Today they actually liked the game I brought in.  Today went by quickly.  Today was good.

Valentine's Day

"Sometimes people don't think you love them unless everyone else can see." I may or may not have quoted this wrong, but I got the gist of it. It's from the movie Valentine's day, and it really stuck out to me. Especially looking at yesterday. Just being at work, I got to hear about all the fancy restraunts and such everyone was going to and the griping about costs. I couldn't help but smile, knowing that my Valentine's day was going to seem so simple to all of them, but was absolutely perfect for the two of us.   And knowing that I don't need everyone else knowing about our love for it to be real. I keep most of it to myself and that's ok. That doesn't make it any less real or any less important. We know, and that's all that matters. The point of this post isn't to share my day with the world, but for journaling purposes.  Yesterday was a great day. A simple wonderful great day. I couldn't stop giggling and smiling all day long. I...

Valentines :)

I'm so excited for tomorrow. I've been so excited all month. I absolutely love February, it's my new favorite month. There's just so much love in the air! And not just from sweethearts and such, from everyone. There's always those grumps and such, but that's alright. I've always loved Valentines day. When I was little, my parent's always made the day special for us. I keep remembering this one Valentines day where my mom sent us on a scavenger hunt around the house, and then at the very end there was a stuffed giraffe waiting for me. I still have that giraffe. It was such a sweet valentines day I'll always remember. He was my very first Valentine, and will be mine for all the rest :) I kinda like him. I'm excited to spend tomorrow with him, celebrating the day of love! Hope you're all having a happy Valentine's day and a happy February!

How to College Edition: Laundry

During the past few months, I've had to relearn how to do a lot of things, the college way. And I feel the need to share these tips with the world. But also it's a great way to share silly stories. So here we go, how to college edition: laundry. 1. Doing laundry in college is awkward. 2. Which is why I procrastinate it as long as possible, making it hard to carry. 3. Hence, this. The best way to escort your laundry when it's too heavy to carry and you live on the fourth floor. First I attempted using my belt to drag my laundry along, but it wasn't strong enough. So I found a use for the snake bike lock that is not strong enough to protect one's bike in the city. This was a life saver. 4. Wear your most unattractive clothes to the laundry room. Nothing is more awkward than a boy chatting you up, trying to get your number while you're loading your underwear in the washer next to his. As you can see, I have mastered this.  5. Boys will see your un...

Tribute: Jake Adam York

This last month I've really gained an appreciation for poetry. The way someone can craft words so beautifully, so simply, yet so profound. And I can't help but remember who first opened my eyes to poetry, particularly free verse. That would be Jake Adam York. He was a professor here at my school, and last semester he came into my UHL class and gave a presentation called " Inscriptions for Air ". It was a painful yet moving presentation to sit through. Painful because York recounted in detail and with images the brutality of the Civil Rights Movement. This was the first time I've almost cried in a class. While listening, I felt ashamed of my skin color. York touched on that very topic himself, saying that he always made sure to wear a nice black blazer so he didn't look as intimidating with his white skin and bald head. York spoke about what he's doing to help. Along with an organization, York was finding the names of people who were harmed in the Civil R...

Relief

Today was a great end to the week. At the beginning, I thought I was headed into yet another week of doubt and crazyness and stress. But as I type this, I'm feeling so relieved. I made it through the crazy work weeks. That's a huge worry off my list. I'm feeling much more confident about my classes. I had a rough start this semester and was thinking there was no way on earth I could make it through these classes. There was just no way. Plus, I hated my creative writing class. My intro to creative writing class. That's my major right there, if I hate the intro class, what exactly am I supposed to do? I've been doubting my life and passions and everything.  Then I had the blessing of finding out I had misread the syllabus and was doing an extra analysis a week I didn't need to be doing. And on top of that, my teacher gave me extra credit for them. We also had a free write in class and I was able to just write again. It was liberating and gave me confidence. The ...

I'm a grown up/heinous crime against womankind

Today I reached another milestone event in my life, that makes me feel even more like a grown up. I was invited to my first out of work work party, and it's even a +1 invitation. Whoa ho ho. I'm feeling pretty cool right now. Just saying. I've officially gotten through my second rush at the bookstore, and I've made so many friendships and tightened so many more over these past three weeks. Yes, it was stressful/tiring/didn't think I could do it, but I made it out, and have so many friends I made it with! In other news, I committed a heinous crime today. I really should be punished for this one. My dear, pmsing roommate asked me if I had any chocolate she could have. I knew I had two packages of those peanut butter chocolate stick things, their name escapes me at the moment. But, I just had to eat them. My mommy gave me them! They're the last of my chocolate stash. And they're one of my favorite treats. So, I lied and told her I didn't. Yes, you read ...

Quotes Please!

I love quotes. Especially the ones that relate to me. Isn't that why everyone likes quotes? Some of my favorite quotes are from the Notebook, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and AllState Mayhem commercials. Haha!  Anyways, I'm trying to make a big collection of good quotes. So what are some of your favorites?

Meet Misty

Misty joined our family this Tuesday. She's a cocker spaniel, just like our very first dog. I didn't get the opportunity to meet her until Thursday, but it was instant love. She is so. Stinking. Cute.  She loves my hair And when Sammy holds her hand. I like that too ; )  She took my scarf off my neck. This was our very first dog Jenny. She loved to wiggle under our cedar chest and do this. It was so cute.  Misty did the exact same thing! Yesterday when I went home for the weekend though, she wasn't all snuggles. Boy, she loves to bite. And bite. But when she does calm down it's the sweetest thing ever.  Misty is still being potty trained, and having just got here I don't know all the times I need to take her outside. This morning I was awoken to her howling in her kennel. So I let her out and brought her up into our room. She very quickly went and sat on top of Brinley's head. That's where she likes to sleep. Right a...
