Recent Reads- Children's Books

One thing about working in a library is looking at all the books. Lately I've been making displays for the children's section, so I've been going through all the books. And every day I kept seeing all of these hilarious children's books that I just had to show Sammy. Finally I just checked a bunch out and brought them home. To my surprise, he was delighted, and we spent the rest of the night reading these children's books to each other.  It was so much fun! Frank the Monster Who Loved to Dance is so hilarious. While he's dancing his brain falls out, then his eyes, then his his arm, and so on.  Larf is a Sasquatch who hears that another Sasquatch is going to be in town, and things go from there.  Freddie and Gingersnap are a dragon and a dinosaur who teach each other to fly. Honestly, there were a few plot holes in this one, so I don't know if I'd read it again. The idea and the drawings were cute though.  The Glow book I picked simpl...

French Fries

I got into a bit of a, disagreement, about french fries with my family. We were talking about fry sauce and which fries are the best. My favorite place in the world for fries at the moment is Freddy's. They have skinny fries and fry sauce. Since my family has some bottles of fry sauce, we were discussing the best fries, especially for consuming fry sauce. Obviously the best fries are skinny fries. With skinny fries you get more crispy fries, and then your fry sauce to fry ratio is better. When you coat the entire fry, you're getting more sauce for the potato inside.  Look at all those blocks not getting any fry sauce on them with the larger cube (fry). Math my friends. Math is on my side. Skinny fries are the best.   My favorite fries are fries, or even fries and shoestring fries had a baby from this picture.  My very wrong family thinks the best fries for fry sauce are steak fries. No! There's so much potato just sitting there with nothing on it. No cris...

I Feel Like a Fraud

Something that is either very fun, or very not, is going to Walmart to go grocery shopping when you're exhausted, feel like you're going to vomit, and PMS-ing. I've never giggled so hard with Sammy at a Walmart before, and also been so annoyed with him, only to go back to giggling. I'm honestly surprised that we weren't asked if we were drunk or something because I was such a mess, while also having fun. I had quite a few zingers there, that are our new inside jokes.  Anyways, back to Walmart. As we were about to leave, I remembered at the last moment that I needed a new pillow. I've had the same pillows since we got married, two years ago, and I must be a pretty hard core sleeper because my pillows always end up really smashed. Sammy's are still good from the same time. There was one of those carts of pillows in the middle of the aisle and Sammy told me to just get one of those. I laid my head on it and I just couldn't. It wasn't right. So we t...

Pokemon Going, Going, Gone

This is the sad tale of my experience playing Pokemon Go.  It all started one morning as I told Sammy about the game. Somehow, he hadn't heard of it, despite the fact that he stays up to date on these things, and the fact that he loves Pokemon. He immediately downloaded the app, and attempted to catch a Charmander in our living room. After a few failed attempts, I asked if I could try. He let me, and I caught Charmander. I watched his cute little face as he was sucked into the Pokeball. I was then hooked.  I ran around the apartment while Sammy caught another Pokemon. I danced in the background, laughing that the Pokemon was on me. I went to work that day and saw that one of my coworkers was playing as well.  I didn't download the app myself for a few days. When I did, I went around happily catching Pokemon at my parents house. I played the next day (Sunday) as well, but quickly started getting bored. There were no cool Pokemon in my house or where I went. Sa...

Impulse Buy

I like to think that I'm not an impulsive shopper. From my brief stint at Victoria's Secret long ago, I've learned that the little pretty items kept right next to the registers legitimately come in packaging saying impulse buys. So whenever I'm at the store staring at the impulse buys, I stop myself, wanting to beat the system trying so desperately to trick me.  But the other day I was at work, just minding my business, eating my lunch. I decided to check my email like I usually do. There, I saw an email advertising 70% Flash Sale for Deseret Book. Deseret Book is definitely one of my favorite stores. I opened the email to delete it, but then I saw IT.  A $200 painting of George Washington for 70% off. I immediately ran and got my debit card, and then purchased this painting for myself. I couldn't believe it! 70% off a $200 painting! That never happens! Not only was it a painting, but it had a quote from Washington's inaugural speech as president.  ...

Retirement

In the first month and a half at work, the woman who trained me retired, and my boss retired. It was honestly a bit odd. It really blows my mind how attached to these woman I got in such a short amount of time, and all that they were able to teach me. I definitely had a lot of feels on both of their last days.  Christine was the one who trained me, and also someone I really enjoyed talking to. We'd always talk about cooking and our husbands and their weird tastes. She was so impressed by Sammy and the fact that he cooks. Christine was always there to help when you needed it. She also showed me that we aren't here to be abused. When people are treating you badly at work, you have the right to walk away. There's a line between listening to someone vent about their frustrations, and when they're taking them out on you.  Betsy is the one that hired me. She gave me a chance to be in the perfect job for me at this time of my life. She saw something in me, and I'm...

The Best Fourth Ever

This past Fourth of July was honestly the best one that I've had. It was such a great day. Sammy came home from Chicago the day before, and I was so glad to see him. We got to spend the morning snuggling, which was amazing. We went to the grocery store real quick and it was actually a good trip. Usually when we go to the grocery store we fight over silly things and I get a headache for unknown reasons. This time it was rather enjoyable.  As soon as we got home and got the cold items in the fridge, we went swimming! Sammy and I haven't been swimming together in years. Years! It's almost disgusting. We've been at these apartments for two years and have never gone in the pool together. When we got to the pool, no one was there. The water was fantastic, and we had fun trying to remember all the different swim strokes. It's fun being weightless in the pool because we were able to give each other piggy back rides and carry each other bridal style, and just be goof ba...

The History Books

I've been thinking a lot lately about what the history books are going to say about 2016 in the future. What are future generations going to look back at say about this time of turmoil? What will their theory be for all the things that are going on right now?  I recently watched a documentary with Sammy about O.J. Simpson done by ESPN. I really recommend it. To be honest, before this documentary the only thing I knew about the guy was that he was friends with the Kardashians and there was something about a Bronco chase. After seeing the documentary though, I feel that I better understand what happened, but also why. I learned about all the racial tensions going on in the LA area at the time. I was honestly shocked because seeing footage from the 80's was so similar to the footage that is filling the news now. Some of the exact same things are still going on. And that's disgusting. Aren't we better than this? Haven't we learned that all people are people, and de...

Sneaky Parents

I like to think that I'm a perceptive person. That I know when people are hiding things from me. Well, I no longer think that. Because, my parents have been fooling me for an entire month. See, when they told me that my grandma was visiting just a week after they were going to visit her, I didn't think twice about it. Sounded fine to me. When I noticed they were more anxious, I just figured they were anxious. When they told me I needed to make time to hang out this weekend, I figured it was because my grandma would be there.  Nope. Turns out, my grandma was coming because my dad has been called to be the Bishop. When they told me, I literally sat there in shock holding my face. Then I wanted to immediately tell Sammy, which I couldn't because they wanted to tell him in person. Waiting four hours to talk to him about it was pretty hard, but I did it. Sammy's reaction was pretty great. He jumped backwards and went huh! Like Ben Wyatt in Parks and Rec.  I was ...

Recent Reads

Here's this weeks recent reads.  Ever since I read the plot synopsis for this book, I've been waiting for it to come out. I almost bought the e-version to read the day it came out, but then used my library powers and had a copy the next day. This book is about Castella whose father believes he's a prophet and their family are the only ones who will go to heaven. He's raised them out in the woods with some pretty messed up beliefs. However, the kids end up having to go to high school, and Castella starts to grow in drama class. With some room to breathe, Castella starts to question her beliefs and her family. Then, her dad announces that they'll be going to heaven very soon.  This book was a bit dark, but I absolutely loved it. Probably because I wrote a story about a cult and a girl leaving it for school, but ended up getting a B- because I struggled to flesh out the belief system in my story. So I wanted to see how someone else did that. I also love read...
