A few weeks ago, I was dog sitting for my parents. (And fish sitting. And last minute hedgehog sitting.) The plan was, they'd leave in the morning, then I'd come over and pick up the dog. I didn't have room in my house for the hedgehog so I'd have to keep going over to feed it and the fish. I ended up having to work out of the blue that morning, so I rushed from work straight to my parents house to let the dog out to pee and get her things.
Miss Remi. She's cute.
Remi still has issues with not peeing in the house and peeing when she first sees people, so when I got there I was focused on getting her outside as soon as I could. With a dancing dog at my heels, I threw the sliding door open and got her outside. I shut the door and waited for her to do her business. When she finally did, I went to open the sliding door. In my hurry to get outside, I hadn't fully moved the bar up. When I'd shut the door, the bar fell down, locking me out. My stomach sank. Then growled, because I'd planned on having lunch right after taking Remi pee.
Not wanting to alarm anyone yet, I walked to the front door, hoping that my memory of locking it was false. It was locked. I then circled the house and tried all of the windows. Then I tried to break into the basement window wells, but couldn't. Then and only then did I call my parents. Who then freaked out because they were in the middle of Wyoming and there was no spare key to get in. My dad told me that I was going to have to find a hanger and try and break in. The thing is, there were no hangers.
I found a sort of stake and used that, trying to shimmy my way through the door. I quickly realized that the way it was set up would be impossible to break in, along with the way the windows were.
For the longest time, I've always loved spy movies and shows. I've liked to think that I could be a spy. Or that I could be like my heroines in my books. Well, this along with other events has been a rude awakening that I am not that kind of person and will never be. I couldn't figure out how to break into the house.
I sat in the backyard with the dog barking, ready to cry. I was hungry and tired. I was praying and praying for some idea, for some way to get into the house. I flipped through my phone, looking at all my contacts. A certain name stuck out to me. I remembered that her husband ran his own business, and cleaned windows. I figured if anyone would know how to get into the house, it'd be them. So I texted them, and they said they'd be over in a bit.
While I was waiting, three of my moms friends showed up to help me. We watched YouTube, they got an actual wire hanger, but we still couldn't get in. They started calling others as well to help us. It was quickly turning into a party in the backyard. I'm surprised the neighbors didn't call the police.
Eventually, the couple who's name popped in my head arrived. As soon as they got there their kids had to pee, but the house was locked. So, the backyard was used. They quickly found a window that wasn't completely locked, and broke in. After being out there for over an hour, they'd solved my problem in minutes. It was a relief.
Once we were in, everyone wanted to see the hedgehog, so I grabbed it for them. Everyone loved it. The window was put back together and everyone was leaving, but I was still holding a hedgehog. I set it down on the kitchen counter, for just a moment as I walked everyone to the door. It then proceeded to jump off the counter. Greeeaat.
I figured if it'd died, it'd still be gone when I came back so I took everyone outside and said a million thank yous. Then I came back and picked it up. It proceeded to poop all over me. I took a picture to show Sammy what I'd been through.
I was then covered in poop and tried to get rid of it. I had to flip it over and it did not like that so it freaked out and poked me like crazy. That hurt.
Just typing this whole thing out has been stressful. It was a really crazy few hours and I'm so glad it's over. The whole church knows my parents house is impossible to break into, and I learned to be extra careful. It's a funny story that I'll definitely remember.
