Book of Mormon Musical?

Well, it's here in Denver. Kind of hard not to notice it with all the signs. The Book of Mormon Musical. I have very mixed feeling about this. I know that in the grand scheme of the universe, this musical shouldn't bother me so much. But it really, really does. The Book of Mormon is something very near and dear to my heart. And I know that people make fun of the LDS church on an hourly basis. I've heard all the jokes. Not a big deal. Plus, I'm blonde. I can take a joke. But this musical really disturbs me.

I listened to the songs when they were released, thinking oh, I'm gonna be one of those cool people who fights for this play. But then I really started listening to the words. And they bothered me. A lot. Saying that missionaries who are out in the field make up things on the spot, like having sex with frogs will get rid of aids, it bugged me. I don't even want to talk about some of the other songs. I heard them and felt, just not right. I was comforted by the fact that the musical wouldn't be here for awhile. Maybe all the hype would die down. Yet here it is.

What really gets me though, is if this musical was about some other religious group, like, say Hindu for example, the response would probably be different. That wouldn't be 'ok.' Yet here's the BOM musical, and it's 'hilarious.' I've heard it all. "Well, it's brilliant in the musical theatre genre, so, it's really ok, blah blah." That's fine. You can have your opinion. But don't judge me for being upset with this musical and not wanting to hear about it.

  1. Ugh. I just looked up the plot synopsis on wikipedia. I definitely shouldn't have, because now I'm upset about it.

    1. I know right? What really bothers me is one of the songs, what they're actually saying. I hear people singing that song all the time and it makes me upset.

  3. Hi, there! Just wanted to say that I saw this musical on Broadway and, while its comedy was definitely outrageous (as is everything Trey Parker & Matt Stone do), I came away from it with a really positive feeling - about the Mormon faith and human beings in general. The message is actually one of tolerance and respect for all faiths - they use LDS Church, but it could be about any and all religions - and while it pokes fun in an often jaw-dropping way, it's somehow never mean-spirited.

The missionary character who "makes up things on the spot" is not meant to be a typical representative of the LDS Church, either, but a misfit who doesn't know anything about his own religion (didn't pay attention in church or classes, etc.) and is sent to Africa with an "A+ student" type, but the two are woefully unprepared for the extreme suffering they encounter there. Still, the LDS missionaries are the heroes of the show and are very sympathetic, which reflects Parker & Stone's affection for their Mormon friends, whom they've repeatedly called the "nicest people" they know. You still might not want to see this show, but I hope I've been able to alleviate some of the upset feelings, at least... (Also, I can't imagine listening to the songs out of context - yikes!) :)

    1. Hey! Thanks for the comment. Although I still don't want to see the show, it never hurts to understand a little bit more about it. I know I can't have a complete opinion without actually seeing the show, but hearing the songs and such made me a bit upset. But thanks for enlightening me a bit more!

Fake

I feel like a lot of times when going through blogger, I'm always pushing the boundaries a bit. A lot of blogs seem to always be happy and awesome and they just won this free product from someone and it's great! And then, I'm over here in my little corner of the blogosphere wondering, hey, should I actually write about this? Is this something that you just pretend like it never happens? Am I the only one this happens to? My favorite moments are when I find someone cutting down those walls and sharing what life is actually like. That they have zits. That they don't have the perfect relationship and baby. That they've struggled with mental health. That they're secretly gross like me. (I took a quiz on buzz feed about how secretly gross are you, and I got pretty gross. In the guise of not being fake, I am sharing this fact with you all!) When I find those blog posts, I instantly feel a connection with that person and will automatically follow them on their life j...

Liebster-ing it up!

Funny story. A few days ago I was reading all the blogs I follow like I usually do. And of course I read  Jana's  blog and read about how she had won the Liebster award. I had no idea what it was, so I read her post full of fun facts, and for everyone I kept nodding my head going, I DO THAT TOO! Then today I re-read her blog, and realized that she'd nominated me for the Liebster award as well! It was a very exciting moment. Thank you! So I guess this is how it works, I think, I'm new to this whole thing. I totally just stole this off Jana's blog ;) "The Liebster Blog Award is given to bloggers by bloggers. It is a way to acknowledge each other and say 'you're doing a great job.' It is for blogs with 200 or less followers, so it's also a great way to spread the word about smaller blogs & get them more readers/ followers! When you receive the award, you post 11 random facts about yourself and answer 11 questions from the person who nominated y...

Christmas Lights

It’s funny having a baby and then trying to do things. I’ve noticed over the last year that I’ve gotten an I Can’t do that sort of attitude. We can’t do that because Aaron will cry and we’ll get cranky and so on. I’m really trying to work on that.  My anxiety out in public is much worse too. Now I have two people to protect not just myself. The library definitely changed how I look at places and I wish it hadn’t.  Sammy really wanted to go to a Christmas village downtown but I was too overwhelmed by all the logistics. So we compromised and went to one near us. It was so much fun! It was cold out but not too too bad. Aaron loves looking at the Christmas lights at our apartments, and he really loved these ones. It was so much more fun trying to look at these things through his eyes.  He was also fascinated by the mini Santa and Mrs. Clause at grandma’s house.  I’m so glad we went and can’t wait to go next year when he’s walking:)
