Mexico Vacation Day 2

It's always so weird sleeping in hotels because Sammy and I have a queen size bed, and there are always kings. I feel like in a king sized bed, Sammy's not even there. I can't just move my leg and touch his foot, I have to really go for it. Anyways. On day two of our vacation we got up a little early because it was time to swim with dolphins! I woke up having a panic attack a few times during the night because I was so nervous. My stomach was a bit upset from the food, my ear still hadn't popped, and I've never swam with a dolphin so there's that.

We woke up to a little bird on our balcony who almost came through the door.
Then, on our way to breakfast, we heard this horrible noise and looked up into the tree to see some coati's right before they threw a coconut down onto the sidewalk, almost hitting us. They threw it so that they could crack it and get the milk out.
It was so awesome to just throw on a swimsuit, a coverup, and some flip-flops instead of layers and layers of clothes
I was nervous the whole way to meet the dolphins, which is why I made Sammy schedule this activity on our first morning there, so I wouldn't be stressed about it the whole time. The nice thing when Sammy scheduled the trip was that they picked us up from our hotel and drove us straight there. When we were driving on one of the roads to get in, we were shocked to see a train of camels. We literally turned back in our seats to take it in.

When we checked in for the dolphins, they asked us if we wanted to buy the photo package. Sammy didn't want to because of the price, but I told him we had to. It wasn't like we were going to do this again. The package we got came with a free hat, bag, printed photos, cd, and exclusive photo op. It was one of the best things we could have done because the exclusive couples photo with the dolphin was our very favorite.

Everything was very chill as we got ready to swim with the dolphins, something I'm so grateful for. I didn't feel too freaked out as we got our life vests, our instructions, and so on. As we saw the fins coming out of the water, Sammy and I got so excited.

The water into the pool was so cold, it hurt to walk in. We slowly made our way over to our trainer and our dolphin. Her name was Andromeda, and she was 7 years old. Andromeda kept leaving to go play with her friend Cosette, which was really cute. We'd just have to wait there for her to come back. The trainers didn't discourage it because the dolphins are there to have fun and if they want to go say hi for a bit, there's no problem with that.
We got to do five activities with the dolphins. A hand shake, a kiss, a target hit, a boogie board ride, and a belly ride. We also got to pet the dolphin as we waited for everyone to get ready for each activity. There was this cute little British lady next to me who'd come on her own and struggled with a few of the activities. When we had to swim, she kept grabbing onto me which was funny. It was so cool being in a pool with people all over the world, and a dolphin.

For the boogie board ride, the dolphin would push you by your feet across the pool. She was fast and powerful.

Sammy hates all of his pictures of him with the belly swim, so I won't be sharing those because I love him ;)

To get each behavior, you had to do a certain hand signal. The dolphin would look at your for a moment, go underwater, then pop up right next to your face to do the behavior.

Last but not least, the exclusive couple photo we received.
When I was little, I remember telling my mom once that I was going to be a cowgirl with a bunch of horses, who also raised dolphins. After spending an hour with some dolphins, I briefly considered my old dream. Haha!

After swimming with the dolphins we had a little time on their exclusive beach, and got lunch. Everyone who talked to Sammy our whole trip automatically started talking to him in Spanish, and it was so much fun to hear him actually using his Spanish with people. I was able to follow along with most of the conversations since they were just small talk, but I wasn't really able to respond in Spanish as well. Everyone asked Sammy why he hadn't taught his wife Spanish. ;)

Sitting there, after swimming with a dolphin, on the beach, watching the Mexico flag flying in the breeze, seeing how friendly everyone was, I was in heaven.

When we got back to our hotel, we grabbed our books and headed straight to the pool. The pool was amazing. It wasn't deep, and the water was so cold that it hurt, but it needed to be that cold because of how hot it was outside. We spent our whole afternoon hopping in the pool, then drying off, then hopping right back in. Sammy kept carrying me bridal style in the pool which was fun.

After some time tanning, we found a spot in the shade to do some reading. Sammy was more than willing to stand behind me and get this awesome picture. I'm pretty sad that the books I read this week won't be read like this.
On our way to dinner we saw our first iguana, which I was so pumped about since I love lizards.
The resort had five different restaurants that you could eat at for dinner, and so we tried the Italian restaurant that night. It was so. fancy. The waiter put my napkin on my lap, they switched out our silverware with each course fancy. It was also right on the beach, so the ocean was next to us.
When I was ordering my meal he asked if I wanted a salad and I just glanced at the two options pretty quickly and picked a Caprese salad. I was shocked when I was handed this.
Where was the lettuce?! Everyone I've told this story to though seems to know that a caprese salad is a stuffed tomato, so I guess I'm just out of the know. Since I'm not the biggest tomato fan, I used my cut the food up and spread it around the plate trick to make it look like I'd ate it. To my delight they served pizza at the Italian place, which I was so happy about because my stomach had been really upset after every meal, so I was happy to have a classic. It was some bomb pizza, even Sammy was impressed and he's really picky with his pizza. We loved the food and decided we were definitely coming again.

That night was when my hair was finally feeling the humidity and I got this lovely photo.
Day two was probably one of my favorites of the trip.

Racism, stereotypes, and plain ole judging

Being in a class dedicated to the idea of migration has really kept the idea of racism on the brain. In elementary school, the idea of racism was so defined to me, thinking people are better than others based solely on the color of their skin. It wasn't until middle school after reading many books that I realized racism wasn't jut as issue of black versus white, rather it applies to all cultures. In high school I was actually shocked to here racist statements from people I loved. All the sudden this issue became personal somewhat. (My favorite statement was from a little girl who said, it should be illegal for Mexicans to have babies. I guess I can't have kids then.)  But it wasn't until last week when we did an activity in my public health class that I realized that I myself was being racist as well. Now, this is something I am not proud of. I'm very embarrassed actually and that activity was humbling. Why am I writing about this? Because, it's som...

Toxic Masculinity

It seems like forever ago that they released that Gilette ad about toxic masculinity. I watched as people I'd grown up with freaked out about it, saying that it said that men need to be like women, and that it condemned masculinity altogether, along with other things. I crafted post after post to write on my social media, but in the end didn't bother writing anything. I didn't feel like arguing with people. But I had to share my thoughts somewhere, so here they are.  To me, toxic masculinity is exactly what it says-- ideals of masculinity that are toxic. It's telling your son that he needs to suck it up and not cry. That he can get away with more than girls because 'boys will be boys.' The idea that he can't read or watch certain media because it's "for girls." At the same time, girls are asked to watch things that are "for boys" all of the time. It's the idea that men need to repress their feelings. That they can't be sc...

Little Bit o Writing Monday

The beginning of my short story for class.  When Dora's son tugged on her pants leg, the last thing she expected was to see him holding a tooth. A tooth that clearly did not belong to him. She was no dentist, but she was smart enough to know the colossal thing couldn't have come from Mark's mouth. “Mark, where did you find that?” Dora scolded. “In the backyard.” “Show me where,” Dora commanded. Excited, Mark ran out to the backyard, Dora following on his heels. He led her over to the back of the yard, to the particular corner that couldn't be seen from the kitchen window. There, her other two children were gathered around a hole in the ground. Hole was an understatement though, they'd obviously been working on this, pit, for quite sometime. If there had been no tooth, Dora would have sat the kids down and explained how digging holes this deep was dangerous because of all the water, electric, and who knows what else lines were under the ...
