Prom!

Prom was last night. You might have guessed that from the title of this post. But before I talk about prom, I need to address something really quick. Last week a lot of my friends that have moved or gone to college were in town. Seeing them all in the same building like old times again was simply amazing. I was so happy to see them and it was, just wow. It felt amazing. And I couldn't help but thinking I hope that's what heavens like, that we get to see all the wonderful amazing people we've gone through this crazy journey called life with and hug and catch up and just, yeah. I mean, I know that's what heaven is going to be like. I just hope that I make it and so do all those I love.

Back to prom. Prom was on a Friday. But not any friday. 4/20 to be exact. For  those of you who live in a sheltered world that's code for everybody goes and smokes marijuana on the same day. Yeah. Stupidest thing ever. It's really sad that it exists, and that it's getting so bad that most schools were cancelled because they didn't want to deal with all the high kids. But we had school, the day of prom. It was pretty dumb. Pretty pretty dumb. In rebellion, I painted my nails during school. I wasn't the only one doing that, the whole library was. Man it reeked of paint fumes.

Because my nails were wet and I didn't want to mess them up and I was sooo hungry, I asked the bestby if he could possibly peel my orange that was a snack. He's never peeled one before so it was a new experience. He is the only person I know who can get injured peeling an orange. He got a ton of orange juice in his eye. I didn't know whether to laugh or worry. So I did both and then finished up the orange.
Blah blah, school's boring. Let's get to the dance! We got out early and I went straight home and my mom straightened my hair. Then I picked up the boutinerre, I have NO idea how that is spelled. I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I saw it, I went to a flower shop and had no idea what I was doing so I told the lady what our colors were and she suggested a white rose with lime green ribbon and I was like, ok, and yeah. When I picked it up, it wasn't as pretty as I thought it was going to be. I contemplated spray painting it, but there simply wasn't enough time.

So, I started working on my hair and makeup and smelling nice at one, and I was finished by 3:30. The bestby texts me at 3:30 saying he's going to take a shower now. I was freaking out a little bit that we were going to be extremely late, but it all worked out because, Sammy's a boy. It only takes them a half hour to get ready. This concept still blows my mind. Anyways, while I was waiting for him to get ready, we took pictures outside! Guess what guys!  actually did something with my hair! It only took about twenty five bobby pins to achieve though. Chignons= awesome. I love having a laptop and being able to get onto Seventeen's website now and look at their hairdos.

This is how my hair started out. It fell out about twenty billion times during the night and I finally just gave up and took it out.

We took these while waiting for Sammy to get over, haha! Oh, my dress didn't have the black thingy originally. Forever 21 is a great store if you need to make a dress modest, just by the way. I always find some shirt hidden somewhere in the store that works! Oh! And nobody had my dress at prom. Score!

Sammy and his mom came over and we had the ritual of exchanging flowers. I had a pretty hard time getting his flower on his coat. My dad wouldn't help me :( Luckily my mom came to the rescue in the end and helped get it on. After she showed me how, I got the other pin in. I loved the corsage the best by picked. It had pink roses and LACE! I love lace. And the lace even matched the lace on my shirt which matched the lace strap thingy on the dress. Pretty exciting moment.

And Sammy's vest and tie were key lime green! I absolutely LOVE that color and was so excited when that's what he picked! He looked pretty fantastic in it. All the guys looked pretty good in their tuxs but my man looked hawt. He could so be a model for Men's Wearhouse, at least in my book. The bestby looked goooood!

The internets being dumb so I'm just going to put all the pictures at the end from now on. Just by the way. They're mostly the same as the pictures on Facebook but I didn't feel like explaining them there so I'll explain them here. Just by the way. Again

After Corsages, we went to a park and took pictures and it was way fun being with both our moms and just goofing around. I keep getting all sentimental about everything lately, so that was really amazing. Instead of a purse, I brought my fanny pack. Yeah. Talk about awesome.

We got lost trying to find Jessie's house where the pictures were being taken and we were being picked up by the limo. At first I was like, eh, limo, I don't really want to ride in it but I'm glad we did. It was a fun experience and I didn't have to stress about driving downtown. I still have no idea how I'm going to get around next year. But, I must add that riding in a limo was cool and all, it wasn't as exciting as they make it look on the television. Gabe rolled down the windows and yelled at people on the street and they all waved back, it was pretty funny.

Where we ate dinner was SO COOL! It was so fancy and in like a bank or something. We got to eat in the wine cellar room. Everything was so fancy, they waitresses even put our napkins on our laps. Sammy pulled my chair out for me every time I sat down. Last year at prom, the first time he did that, I didn't know what he was doing and I said, Hey I wanted to sit there, and he said, I know that's why I pulled the chair out. This time I knew what he was doing!

They gave us shrimp baskets as an appetizer. I don't eat seafood especially after I had two pet fishes and they died, so I entertained myself by making the shrimp walk across the table. Then the bestby and I had shrimp fights. Luckily the people we were sitting with thought it was funny. Nobody there knew how to properly eat the shrimp so Cameron had to give us a lesson, which was good because Gabe accidentally ate the shell and spit it in his napkin and asked the waitress for a new napkin. The food was pretty amazing though! Plus I got to know all the people in our group! They were amazing and I wish that I had gotten to know them earlier, but at least I got to meet them!

Prom was absolutely fantastically indescribable. It was at the Bronco's stadium in one of the rich people areas. The theme was Stars on the Horizon and everything looked like Hollywood. There was a red carpet and cutouts and lights and the stars on the floor. I have to give those juniors some props, that was really well done. When we first got there, my favorite teachers had just arrived too so we got to ride in the elevator with them. Ms. Keigan stood next to the doors the whole time so she could get there faster. She really likes to dance.

The dj was alright. They should have hired my dad's friend just saying. But that doesn't really matter. It just felt so, surreal there. Being with all the people I've gotten to know over the past four years. Sentimental moment coming on. Despite all the crap and drama that's happened over the years, we all were able to be in the same room and dance together and all just have a great time. I felt sad knowing that very very soon, I won't see most of those people again. So it was cool just living it up, smiling, laughing, having a good time.  It was cool even seeing the campos who scare me all dressed up and laughing. A really nice thing was that I don't care who saw me dancing, or anything I did all night. I didn't do anything I'm ashamed of. It was nice to have that feeling. :)

All that fun came at a cost. I was soooo tired. I just laid on Sammy's shoulder the whole drive home. It was funny listening to everyone's conversations without even looking at them. When Sammy and I were driving home after prom to go to after prom, haha, when we started the car. Then something moved on the roof. Stopped the car, waited, then started it again. Black legs appeared on the window and I just screamed and screamed and screamed. It was a cat. There was a cat sitting on the roof of the car and it couldn't figure out how to get down. I got out and put it on the ground. It was a cute cat, it meowed at me and was so cuddly. I just wanted to keep it. Apparently I get really emotional at one in the morning cause I started crying a little bit because I missed the cat and I felt bad for it. Don't judge.

After prom was alright. It wasn't as fun as it was the year before because we were so tired and our friends were all over the place and some weren't there. I was so tired I brought in the wrong ticket to get in and they were like whoa this is the wrong ticket and I was like oh so I walked out to go get the right one and the adults freaked out because I had to be escorted to my car because I might go do drugs or bring in alcohol or something. Hey, I'm glad for those measures I didn't want to deal with those people. We played mini golf though and ate the food! It was soooo good! THEY HAD CHICKEN NUGGETS! I really wanted some chicken nuggets but the restaurant was so fancy they didn't sell chicken nuggets. So I got my chicken nuggets. Score!

We went home and fell right asleep on the couches. Yes, you read that right, Sammy slept at my house. And he's a boy! Haha! He slept over because I didn't want to drive by myself at three in the morning and he didn't have his car and we had permission and everything. And we didn't do anything bad. It makes me kind of sad when you hear people talk about how senior prom is all about sex. It shouldn't be. I looked at it as a night to be with everyone I've grown to know and love over the years and just celebrate everything we've accomplished. In very pretty clothes. But yeah. Sadness. Because waiting is one of the things that I truly believe helps make Sammy and my relationship work. It's not about that. We're best friends who love each other with nothing else attached. I just felt like I needed to share that.

You know what's so annoying? When you're having a sleepover and you wake up first and you just lay there not knowing what to do. Yeah, well I didn't have to deal with that this morning because the bestby and I woke up at the same time! Score! We attempted to make pancakes for breakfast but that didn't go so well, we managed to burn them all while the insides weren't cooked. Cross pancakes off the list of things I can cook. Then we ended the day/morning brushing our teeth together. Yeah, we're cute :) Hahaha!

So that was prom. I'm running on only a few hours of sleep right now so I probably forgot some things and will add them later. But I had an amazing night that I'll never forget and I'm so glad I was able to go. Next up on the senior year list, senior ditch day.

Racism, stereotypes, and plain ole judging

Being in a class dedicated to the idea of migration has really kept the idea of racism on the brain. In elementary school, the idea of racism was so defined to me, thinking people are better than others based solely on the color of their skin. It wasn't until middle school after reading many books that I realized racism wasn't jut as issue of black versus white, rather it applies to all cultures. In high school I was actually shocked to here racist statements from people I loved. All the sudden this issue became personal somewhat. (My favorite statement was from a little girl who said, it should be illegal for Mexicans to have babies. I guess I can't have kids then.)  But it wasn't until last week when we did an activity in my public health class that I realized that I myself was being racist as well. Now, this is something I am not proud of. I'm very embarrassed actually and that activity was humbling. Why am I writing about this? Because, it's som...

Toxic Masculinity

It seems like forever ago that they released that Gilette ad about toxic masculinity. I watched as people I'd grown up with freaked out about it, saying that it said that men need to be like women, and that it condemned masculinity altogether, along with other things. I crafted post after post to write on my social media, but in the end didn't bother writing anything. I didn't feel like arguing with people. But I had to share my thoughts somewhere, so here they are.  To me, toxic masculinity is exactly what it says-- ideals of masculinity that are toxic. It's telling your son that he needs to suck it up and not cry. That he can get away with more than girls because 'boys will be boys.' The idea that he can't read or watch certain media because it's "for girls." At the same time, girls are asked to watch things that are "for boys" all of the time. It's the idea that men need to repress their feelings. That they can't be sc...

Little Bit o Writing Monday

The beginning of my short story for class.  When Dora's son tugged on her pants leg, the last thing she expected was to see him holding a tooth. A tooth that clearly did not belong to him. She was no dentist, but she was smart enough to know the colossal thing couldn't have come from Mark's mouth. “Mark, where did you find that?” Dora scolded. “In the backyard.” “Show me where,” Dora commanded. Excited, Mark ran out to the backyard, Dora following on his heels. He led her over to the back of the yard, to the particular corner that couldn't be seen from the kitchen window. There, her other two children were gathered around a hole in the ground. Hole was an understatement though, they'd obviously been working on this, pit, for quite sometime. If there had been no tooth, Dora would have sat the kids down and explained how digging holes this deep was dangerous because of all the water, electric, and who knows what else lines were under the ...
