I went to yet another author book signing a few weeks ago, this one for Kiersten White. She was coming to town with four other authors, and it was amazing. I've been waiting for her to go on tour since her book And I Darken came out this summer. I was stoked when I found out she was coming to Denver.
I've read four of Kiersten's books, but her newest one is my favorite. This book signing was different however because I talk to Kiersten quite frequently on Twitter. If we had to assign twitter besties, I'd definitely choose her. She always makes me laugh, and always answers my tweets. I've asked her about having a W last name affecting book sales, I've asked her for advice about wrist pain, and I told her about how I talk about weed when I'm nervous and meeting authors even though I've never touched it. Kiersten is also LDS so I've asked her about how she balances her faith with her stories, specifically when it comes to sexy time for characters. She told me it's all about your audience, and what you're personally comfortable with. She'd never put it in her stories meant for 12-15 year olds, but does hint at it in her older novels.
Two other authors that were there were Amie Kaufman and Jak Kristoff. They wrote Illuminae which is a pretty hard core science fiction novel. I read it, and it wasn't for me. However, in their books they kill off a lot of people. They have lots of casualty lists in their books, and their author friends all make their way onto them. At the event, they had a contest and if you won, they'd kill you in their next book. I didn't win, which ended up in this conversation with Sammy. 
The signing started right then, and I was waiting in line looking at one of the other author's books when a little voice said, "Excuse me." I looked up and it was Kiersten White! She'd walked right in front of me!
Even though there were five authors, this signing went faster than any other I've gone to. I ended up getting another author's book because it sounded amazing after hearing her talk about it. Since there were so many author's, we couldn't get individual pictures with each of them, so I took a creeper shot of Kiersten. I love her hair so much!
When I got to Kiersten, she told me that one of her books I'd bought was the one that people said the main character was too angry, so she decided to write a teenage Vlad the Impaler as a girl. I told her I loved both of them, and then told her I talk to her all the time on Twitter, and my name is Kylee. Guys, she knew who I was! She remembered me and said that it's so nice to meet Twitter friends in person. We chatted for a bit and it felt so much more natural than talking with other authors. It got really loud and we couldn't hear though, so it didn't last long. Kiersten told me to keep my sticky note because I'd need it for the other authors, but I only came for her so I left. I kept the sticky note though, because she told me too.
After I got home, I tweeted her the screenshot of Sammy and my text and told her it was so good meeting her. She tweeted back that my tweet made all the authors laugh in the hotel. I seriously love meeting author's so much, and really hope that I get my chance to be in their shoes soon. Also if you get the chance to meet Kiersten White, do it! She's hilarious.
